A great deal has been written and said in the media recently about an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) commercial air purifier and an ozone generator. Unfortunately, as often happens during media frenzies, the truth gets lost amid generalizations, assumptions and poor reporting.

First, what is ozone? Ozone (O3) is composed of 3 oxygen atoms and is considered a very reactive gas. When a chemical reaction between the diatomic oxygen molecule (O2) and an oxygen atom (O) takes place, ozone is formed. There is some confusion about "good" ozone and "bad" ozone. Ozone in the upper atmosphere is very beneficial in that it protects us from the sun's harmful UV rays. However, breathing in heavy concentrations of ozone is potentially dangerous to the lungs.

The primary difference between ESP air cleaners and ozone generators is this: ESP air purifiers produce tiny amounts of ozone as a by-product of the air purification process; ozone generators are built specifically to "intentionally" produce ozone.

With electrostatic precipitator technology, minute amounts of ozone are produced during the ionization process. This is drastically different from ozone generators sold as air purifiers that do not improve indoor air quality, but produce heavy concentrations of potentially harmful ozone. To further confuse the issue, some ozone generator manufacturers use cute names to disguise the ozone such as "saturated oxygen", "activated oxygen" and "pure air". What they are actually producing is ozone, not pure air.

Many ozone generators boast of ozone being an effective germicide. An Environmental Protection Agency study concluded that ozone, even at concentrations almost 100 times the recommended limit for human exposure, was ineffective in killing airborne molds and fungi. The California Environmental Protection Agency's Air Resources Board recommends against the use of ozone generators.

Ozone generators are often touted as being effective in removing tobacco smoke odor. A test conducted by Consumer Reports magazine found this to be untrue. A far more effective and safer approach to removing smoke odors is with an odor neutralizing cartridge.

There is nothing more frustrating than having allergies act up while spending time inside the house, but unfortunately because of the polluted world we live in, it is an inescapable reality for a lot of us asthma victims. Let's face it; No matter how dust free your house is, there is always going to be annoying little pollutants floating in the air, waiting to irritate someone. Be it pet odors, cooking odors, cigarette smoke or any other air contaminating odors you commonly find in occupied homes. Because of this problem, they invented all kinds of fancy technology to eliminate all the, should I say - stinky, contaminated bacteria.

Though often questioned and many times criticized, you start seeing all kinds of these air purifiers hit the market. Many manufacturers have started to produce them and it's amazing how quickly they have started to become a more common household product. For a long time price was a major issue with a lot of folks, but because of the competition within the market place, you can get a reasonable air purifier for next to nothing. Perhaps the best place to look for one would be online. eBay is loaded with them and they are cheap too. The only downside is the shipping costs but hey, you never had to leave the comfort of your home to get it. Convenience comes at a price and in this case, it might even be cheaper than buying one at your local electronic outlet.

Now the question: There is a hundred different ones out there, which one should I get? They come in various shapes and sizes and each one might have a special characteristic to it, but if you get a new one (or a fairly recently manufactured one) even the basic one will be just fine and will do the job.

Now that it is spring, my allergies are getting worse. Does anyone recommend a good air purifier? My biggest concern is the noise level (and of course how well it removes particles). I also do not want an ionic purifier because of the ozone, and they usually are not as effective as HEPA. I have heard of the Blueair air purifiers, but I think they are a little pricey. Are there cheaper but still quiet air purifiers around? Or do you pay what you get? If you have any, please give me some air purifier recommendations.
I have heard of ionic breeze, but I am concerned about the ozone it emits. It also does not do so well at removing particles. Will anyone please recommend a brand or model that i should look at?
